Donald Trump Selects Conservative Commentator Katie Zacharia as Next White House Press Secretary

Published on October 9, 2026

In a move that further solidifies his communications strategy, Donald Trump has chosen conservative commentator and political strategist Katie Zacharia to serve as the next White House press secretary. The announcement, made by the president on Friday, positions Zacharia as his sixth chief spokesperson across his two administrations. The selection highlights Trump’s ongoing effort to assemble a communications team composed of fierce defenders and proven loyalists as he navigates the high-stakes media landscape of his presidency.

Trump praised Zacharia’s dedication to his political movement in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. He described her as "loyal" and characterized her as "a devoted fan and member of MAGA," referring to his signature "Make America Great Again" movement. In his endorsement, Trump emphasized what he described as her "unblemished record of support" throughout his political career. He specifically highlighted her previous contributions to his campaign efforts, noting that she was actively involved in key battleground areas. Trump wrote that she was previously involved in his campaigns, assisting in key swing states where they won seven out of seven, referring to the crucial battleground states that secured his electoral victory.

Trump expressed strong confidence in Zacharia’s ability to navigate the demanding role of representing the executive branch to the public and the media. He wrote that he is confident that Katie will deliver strong results for the country as the next White House press secretary, noting that she has the respect of, and will work fantastically with, the media, the American people, and his administration.

Zacharia quickly took to the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, to express her gratitude and accept the high-profile appointment. She wrote that serving President Trump and the American people at this critical 250-year mark is the honor of a lifetime, referencing the historic milestone of the United States’ upcoming semiquincentennial. In her post, Zacharia praised Trump’s leadership, asserting that he has shown America that they can be great again, and that he works to effectuate that greatness every single day. Looking ahead to the challenges of the podium, she added that she eagerly anticipates collaborating with both national and local press, writing that she looks forward to working with the White House press corps, and with reporters across the country, to get that record out.

At 42 years old, Zacharia is a seasoned political strategist who has been active in Republican politics for the vast majority of her adult life. She is a familiar face to viewers of conservative television networks, where she has been a frequent fixture and commentator on channels such as Newsmax and Fox News. Her career in Washington and Republican political circles dates back nearly two decades. In 2006, during the administration of President George W. Bush, she served as an intern for the Republican National Committee and worked within the White House Office of Political Affairs, gaining early experience in executive-level communications and political operations.

Zacharia’s professional background is rooted in law and political advocacy. She is a trained attorney, having received her legal education at Pepperdine University in California. Her legal career has also taken her abroad; in 2011, she spent nearly two years working as a clerk at a law firm in Beijing, China, providing her with international exposure before she returned to focus on domestic conservative politics. Upon her return, she served as general counsel for Fix California, a conservative non-profit organization founded by Ric Grenell. Grenell, a prominent Trump ally who currently serves as the Special Presidential Envoy for Special Missions, has remained an influential figure in Trump’s political circle, and Zacharia’s work with his organization further cemented her ties to the broader MAGA movement.

More recently, Zacharia has been deeply embedded in Trump’s media operations. Since June, she has served as a senior communications adviser for the Trump Media & Technology Group, the parent company of the Truth Social platform, according to her professional LinkedIn profile. Prior to her role at Trump Media, Zacharia had a brief tenure in federal government service earlier this year. From February to March, she worked as a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security. Though her time at the department was short-lived, she later explained that she chose to step down from the position due to the personal toll it took on her family. As a mother of four children, she found the frequent travel and long-distance commute between her home in California and the nation’s capital to be unsustainable.

Despite her limited time in formal government roles, Zacharia has established a reputation as an uncompromising defender of Trump and his policy agenda. She has consistently demonstrated a willingness to push back against critics of the administration. For instance, in a June interview with the BBC, Zacharia vigorously defended Trump’s highly criticized decision to use the White House as a venue to host a televised Ultimate Fighting Championship fight. Responding to detractors who argued the move demeaned the dignity of the presidency, Zacharia argued that the spirit of competitive fighting is deeply aligned with American values. She stated that the core principles of the UFC are the kind of principles that founded the constitutional republic. She expanded on this philosophy, saying that it is about not giving up the fight until the bitter end, and that she thinks there is no better summation of the American ethos than a good UFC fight.

This uncompromising stance was also on display earlier this year when Zacharia authored an op-ed for the New York Post detailing a personal confrontation at her local gym. According to her article, gym staff had asked her to stop wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat while exercising. Zacharia refused to comply, framing the request as an assault on her constitutional rights. She wrote that she responded that she would never take her Trump hat off to appease the left, calling the incident raw, unfiltered intolerance and stating that freedom of speech does not evaporate at the gym door.

This fierce loyalty and ideological alignment appear to be the primary criteria guiding Trump’s personnel choices for his second administration. Justin Buchler, a political science professor at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, observed that the president’s second-term appointments have placed an unprecedented premium on personal relationships and devotion. Buchler told the BBC that Trump’s appointments during his second term have been based on personal affiliation and loyalty, emphasizing that Trump values loyalty first and foremost.

The selection of Zacharia also reflects the evolving nature of political communication in the digital age. Yanna Krupnikov, a political scientist and professor of communication and media at the University of Michigan, noted that Zacharia’s background in both traditional broadcast media and digital platforms like Truth Social highlights a fundamental shift in how modern administrations interact with the public. Krupnikov told the BBC that the selection of Zacharia speaks to a blurring of the lines between different media types. In the modern political landscape, politicians are no longer tasked solely with addressing the traditional press corps in the briefing room; they must also navigate a complex, multi-platform media environment where direct-to-consumer communication is vital. Krupnikov explained that the goal is not as much speaking to the media and journalists, but making sure that particular, very specific soundbites and messages get to ordinary people.

This shift highlights the multifaceted nature of the White House press secretary role, which is widely considered one of the most demanding and high-pressure jobs in Washington. Beyond the highly visible daily briefings at the podium, the press secretary is responsible for managing the often-contentious relationship between the administration and the White House press corps. The role also requires close coordination with various departments within the executive
