UK Government and Geothermal Engineering Limited Announce £43 Million Investment to Bolster Cornish Lithium Production and Create 100 Jobs

Published on September 30, 2026

The United Kingdom’s ambitions to secure a domestic supply of critical minerals have received a significant boost following the announcement of a £43 million investment pledge aimed at scaling lithium extraction in Cornwall. The investment, led by Geothermal Engineering Limited (GEL), is set to support more than 100 high-skilled jobs in the region and marks a pivotal moment in the nation’s transition toward a self-sustaining green energy economy.

Central to this financial package is an "Offer in Principle" worth nearly £10 million from the British government’s DRIVE35 Automotive Transformation Fund. This state backing underscores the strategic importance of Cornish lithium to the UK’s automotive sector, particularly as the global race to secure battery materials intensifies. The news comes during a landmark month for the domestic car industry, which has seen more than £1 billion in secured investment, signaling a robust period of growth and industrial restructuring.

The investment is specifically targeted at the United Downs site, located near Redruth. This facility, which commenced operations in February 2026, represents a frontier in sustainable resource management by producing geothermal electricity and lithium carbonate simultaneously. By utilizing the natural heat and mineral-rich waters found deep beneath the Cornish landscape, GEL is demonstrating a co-production model that could serve as a blueprint for future industrial projects worldwide.

UK Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds hailed the development as a cornerstone of the country’s broader industrial strategy. Speaking on the announcement, Reynolds noted that the investment follows closely on the heels of the significant automotive capital secured earlier this month. He described the move as a "big step towards building our industrial resilience," emphasizing that domestic mineral security is no longer just an environmental goal but a national economic necessity.

The primary driver behind the surging interest in lithium is the exponential rise in demand for electric vehicles (EVs). Lithium is a foundational component of the high-capacity batteries that power modern EVs, and as the global transition away from internal combustion engines accelerates, the pressure on global supply chains has reached unprecedented levels. Market analysts and industry experts forecast that the demand for lithium will increase by a staggering 1,100% by 2035. For the UK, which is home to a major automotive manufacturing base, securing a "home-grown" source of this "white gold" is essential to protecting thousands of manufacturing jobs and ensuring the long-term viability of its car plants.

The United Downs facility is currently producing approximately 100 tonnes of lithium carbonate per year alongside its geothermal power output. However, the newly pledged £43 million investment is designed to facilitate a rapid scaling of these operations. The roadmap for the site aims to increase production to approximately 1,500 tonnes per year by 2029. While this represents a significant increase in output, it is part of a much larger vision for Cornwall, which is rapidly transforming into a centralized hub for lithium extraction and processing.
