Bank of England Governor Warns of Potential Financial Market Shocks from Artificial Intelligence Boom

Published on October 1, 2026

The Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, has issued a comprehensive warning regarding the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI), cautioning that the massive wave of capital currently flowing into the sector could trigger severe financial market shocks. Speaking in an exclusive interview with the BBC, Bailey emphasized that the central bank is monitoring the unprecedented volumes of money being invested in AI "very carefully." While acknowledging the transformative potential of the technology to stimulate economic growth, he warned that the current market optimism, which has driven some tech companies to multi-trillion-dollar valuations, carries substantial risks of an eventual asset price correction.

Over the past several years, global investors have poured astronomical sums of money into AI developers and infrastructure providers, driven by the anticipation of monumental financial returns. This intense speculative interest has propelled several technology firms to historic heights, with market valuations reflecting extraordinary expectations of future profitability. Among the most prominent examples of this phenomenon is the AI chipmaker Nvidia. Propelled by insatiable demand for the advanced processors that power AI models, Nvidia has become the world’s most valuable listed company, boasting a staggering market valuation of $5.5 trillion (£4.14 trillion). This valuation is underpinned by the widespread belief among investors that AI will generate unprecedented corporate profits in the coming years.

At the same time, established technology giants are committing vast capital reserves to maintain their competitive edge. Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon are collectively spending hundreds of billions of dollars on AI research, software development, and the construction of massive data centers. Furthermore, the financial influx shows no signs of slowing down. Two of the world’s leading independent AI developers, Anthropic and OpenAI, are currently preparing to sell shares on the US stock market. Analysts expect these highly anticipated public offerings to channel hundreds of billions of dollars of additional investment into the rapidly expanding sector.
