Molly Shannon Joins “Summer 2000: The X-Cetra Story” as Executive Producer

In another significant development within the independent film and documentary sector, Emmy-nominated actress and bestselling author Molly Shannon has officially joined the production team of Summer 2000: The X-Cetra Story as an executive producer. The announcement comes just days before the film is set to make its Los Angeles premiere at the prestigious AFI Fest on October 24.

Shannon, a beloved figure in American comedy and drama known for her iconic tenure on Saturday Night Live and her nuanced performances in films like Other People, brings a high level of visibility and passion to the project. Following the screening at AFI Fest, Shannon will take an active role in the film’s promotion by moderating a deep-dive Q&A session.

The panel will feature the creative driving forces behind the documentary, including director, writer, and producer Ayden Mayeri, as well as writer, producer, and cinematographer Barry Rothbart. They will be joined by producer Rachael Fung and the central figures of the film: Janet Kariuki, Mary Washburn, Jessica Hall, and Robin O’Brien.

Summer 2000: The X-Cetra Story is a nostalgic and poignant exploration of friendship, time, and the unexpected ways the internet can resurrect the past. The documentary follows a group of women who, as pre-teens in the year 2000, formed a musical group and recorded an album. Decades later, they discover that their childhood creative endeavor has found a second life, becoming a cult hit among online communities twenty years after it was originally made. The film documents their reunion and their efforts to reconcile their adult lives with the "stars" they once dreamed of becoming.
