Published on October 20, 2026

In a celebration of the intersection between fine art and narrative cinema, Film London has announced that triple Academy Award-winning costume designer Sandy Powell will serve as the guest of honor and presenter for the 2024 Film London Jarman Award. The ceremony, scheduled for November 24, marks a poignant full-circle moment for Powell, whose illustrious career began under the mentorship of the award’s namesake, the legendary avant-garde filmmaker Derek Jarman.

The Jarman Award, established in 2008, has become one of the most prestigious accolades in the United Kingdom’s cultural calendar. It is designed to recognize and support U.K.-based artist-filmmakers whose work captures the spirit of innovation, experimentation, and social engagement that defined Derek Jarman’s own filmography. By selecting Powell as this year’s presenter, Film London highlights the enduring legacy of Jarman’s influence on the visual language of contemporary cinema.

A Legacy of Visual Storytelling: Sandy Powell and the Jarman Influence

Sandy Powell’s contribution to the world of film is characterized by a rare ability to blend historical accuracy with bold, imaginative flair. Her relationship with Derek Jarman was foundational; she worked closely with him during the formative years of her career, providing the distinctive sartorial visions for seminal works such as Caravaggio (1986) and Edward II (1991). These films were noted for their defiant blending of period aesthetics with modern sensibilities, a hallmark that Powell would carry into her later, more mainstream successes.

Adrian Wootton, OBE, the Chief Executive of Film London, emphasized the significance of Powell’s involvement in this year’s proceedings. "Sandy’s remarkable career speaks to a truly remarkable talent," Wootton stated. "From her days collaborating with Derek Jarman on films like Caravaggio and Edward II to the peerless design she has brought to a staggering array of modern classics, her work is bold, beautiful and boundlessly creative."

Wootton further noted that Powell’s connection to the award is deeply personal. "She has long been vocal in her support of Derek’s cultural legacy, and, as such, I don’t think we could ask for a more fitting guest of honor for this year’s Film London Jarman Award."

Beyond her early work with Jarman, Powell has become the collaborator of choice for some of the most visionary directors in the industry. Her portfolio includes extensive work with Martin Scorsese on projects like The Aviator and The Wolf of Wall Street, as well as collaborations with Neil Jordan, Todd Haynes, and Yorgos Lanthimos. Her ability to pivot from the gritty realism of a Scorsese epic to the stylized, surreal landscapes of a Lanthimos film speaks to her versatility.
