IMF Report Highlights Rising Demand for Tokenized Equities Amid Persistent Challenges in Liquidity and Volatility

Published on October 11, 2026

This high degree of correlation suggests that tokenized markets are functioning as a preliminary indicator for the traditional stock market. While the volume in tokenized equities is still a fraction of the total market, the speed at which traditional prices catch up to "on-chain" activity indicates that these digital venues are becoming an integral part of the global financial information ecosystem.

The Liquidity and Volatility Gap

Despite the benefits of accessibility and round-the-clock price discovery, the IMF’s report was not without its criticisms. The study found that tokenized stocks are significantly more volatile than the underlying assets they track. On average, tokenized equities were found to be 1.5 times as volatile as the equivalent shares traded on traditional venues.

Tokenized U.S. equities offer off-hours access but carry liquidity and stability risks, IMF says

This heightened volatility is inextricably linked to the issue of liquidity. Because the tokenized stock market is fragmented across various private platforms and public blockchains, the depth of the "order books"—the list of buy and sell orders—is much shallower than on a major exchange like the NYSE. In a low-liquidity environment, even relatively small trades can cause significant price swings, leading to the "illiquid" label the IMF applied to the current state of the market.

Gracy Chen, CEO of the crypto exchange Bitget, noted that the industry is still grappling with how to optimize the assets once they are on the blockchain. "Moving assets onchain is only the first step," Chen said in response to the findings. "The bigger question is how efficiently that capital can work once it is there." Her comments reflect a broader industry sentiment that while the "wrapping" of stocks into tokens is technically simple, creating a robust, liquid ecosystem where those tokens can be traded, borrowed against, and settled seamlessly is a much larger hurdle.

A Growing Market in a Massive Ocean

To put the current market into perspective, the IMF estimated the total tokenized real-world asset (RWA) market at approximately $65 billion as of July 31, 2026. Within that figure, tokenized equities represent roughly $2.3 billion. While $2.3 billion is a significant milestone for the crypto industry, it remains a "drop in the bucket" when compared to the traditional financial system.

The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA), the primary trade group for the U.S. securities industry, estimates the global equity market capitalization at just under $160 trillion for 2025. This comparison underscores the IMF’s message that the tokenized market is still "nascent." For tokenization to move from a niche retail product to a systemic financial tool, it would need to capture a far larger share of that $160 trillion pool.
