Sizewell C Secures Planning Approval for Major Tunnel Production Hub in Avonmouth, Creating 400 Jobs

Published on September 22, 2026

The development of the Sizewell C nuclear power station has reached a significant infrastructure milestone following the granting of planning permission for a specialized tunnel production facility in Avonmouth. Located approximately 10 kilometres northwest of Bristol, the new hub is set to become a cornerstone of the project’s complex engineering requirements, creating up to 400 jobs in the South West and further cementing the region’s role as a vital link in the UK’s nuclear supply chain.

The facility is designed specifically to manufacture the critical pre-cast concrete segments and massive tunnel heads required for the nuclear plant’s marine shafts. These shafts are essential components of the cooling system for the two EPR (Evolutionary Power Reactor) units currently under development on the Suffolk coast. By establishing a dedicated production center in Avonmouth, Sizewell C aims to leverage existing industrial expertise and infrastructure, ensuring that the high-precision components required for the project are delivered to the highest standards of safety and engineering.

This latest approval marks a strategic expansion of an industrial site that has already played a pivotal role in the UK’s energy transition. The Avonmouth location was previously utilized to produce tunnel components for Hinkley Point C, the sister project currently under construction in Somerset. By repurposing and expanding this site, Sizewell C is effectively implementing a "copy-and-repeat" strategy, utilizing the lessons learned and the established industrial capacity from Hinkley Point C to drive efficiencies in the Suffolk project.

Nigel Cann, Chief Executive Officer of Sizewell C, emphasized the national significance of the development, noting that the benefits of the Suffolk-based nuclear project are being felt far beyond the borders of East Anglia. “Opening this facility and supporting hundreds of jobs at Bristol Port shows once again that Sizewell C is delivering growth and opportunities right across the UK,” Cann stated. His comments reflect a broader ambition to ensure that the multi-billion-pound investment in nuclear energy acts as a catalyst for industrial renewal and high-skilled employment in various regions.

The economic footprint of the Avonmouth facility is already becoming visible. Construction of the necessary supporting infrastructure is currently underway, with concrete batching plants, heavy-duty cranes, extensive storage areas, and administrative offices being established on-site. As of the latest reporting, approximately 55 people are directly employed at the site to manage these early-stage operations, supported by a further 86 workers from the wider supply chain. This workforce is expected to scale up significantly as the facility moves toward full operational capacity, eventually reaching the projected peak of 400 personnel.
