CNN Gains Momentum Amid Industry Shifts as Fox News Maintains Dominant Lead in October Ratings

Published on October 20, 2026

A closer look at the Nielsen data for the week of October 5 reveals the specific scale of Fox News’ lead. In primetime, the network averaged 1.6 million total viewers and 145,000 viewers in the Adults 25-54 category. While its total viewership saw a minor dip of 2% compared to the week of September 28, its demo growth of 4% indicates a strengthening hold on the younger audience segments that are vital for long-term sustainability. In the broader context of basic cable, Fox News experienced a slight shuffle, dropping from second to third place in total primetime viewership and ranking sixth in the demo among all cable networks.

In total day viewing, Fox News’ dominance was even more pronounced. The network averaged 1.07 million total viewers and 94,000 in the demo, remaining flat compared to the previous week’s performance. This stability allowed it to maintain its position as the number one network in total day viewership across all of basic cable, while finishing fifth in the total day demographic.

MS NOW’s weekly averages reflected the challenges of maintaining momentum outside of its peak programming hours. The network averaged 902,000 total viewers and 88,000 in the primetime demo. These figures represented a 2% decline in total viewers and a 1% slip in the demo relative to its primetime performance the week prior. The total day figures told a similar story, with the network averaging 570,000 total viewers and 57,000 in the demo. These numbers were down 1% and 8%, respectively, marking MS NOW as the only network to see a decline in every measured category for the week.

Despite these slips, MS NOW’s ranking among all basic cable networks remained competitive, though it did slide from third to fifth place in total primetime viewers. In the primetime demo, it found itself in a tie for 15th place with Comedy Central. For total day performance, the network held the third-place spot in total viewers and ranked eighth in the demo.

CNN’s growth, while coming from a smaller base than its competitors, was statistically significant. The network averaged 577,000 total primetime viewers and 100,000 in the demo, representing a 4% increase in total audience and a 3% rise in the demographic. The network’s total day performance was even more impressive, with 393,000 total viewers and 56,000 in the demo. This translated to a 7% gain in total viewers and an 8% surge in the demo during the total day period.

These gains allowed CNN to climb the ranks of basic cable, moving from seventh to sixth place in total primetime viewers, while holding the 11th spot in the primetime demo. In total day rankings, the network settled at number five for total viewers and ninth in the demo. This steady climb suggests that the Skydance era of CNN is beginning to find its footing, perhaps by capitalizing on the intense news environment surrounding the network itself.
