September Ratings Slump: Cable News Networks See Broad Declines as Viewership Softens Across All Metrics

Published on October 4, 2026

The transition from the summer doldrums into the traditional autumn news cycle failed to provide the typical ratings boost for the cable news industry this year. September 2026 proved to be a remarkably quiet month for the major networks, characterized by a significant cooling of audience engagement across the board. Data provided by Nielsen’s Big Data + Panel integration reveals that all three primary cable news titans—Fox News, MS NOW, and CNN—experienced month-to-month losses in both total viewership and the highly coveted Adults 25-54 demographic. This downturn was not limited to the high-stakes primetime hours but extended into total day averages, suggesting a broader shift in consumer behavior or a lull in the national news cycle that failed to capture the public’s sustained attention.

The month-over-month declines were particularly notable given that August is traditionally considered a slow period for television. However, September managed to underperform its predecessor, leaving industry analysts to examine the underlying causes of the audience attrition. While Fox News maintained its position as the most-watched network in the category, the overall numbers across the industry reflect a challenging landscape for linear news programming. The data highlights a narrowing gap in certain key metrics, particularly between CNN and MS NOW, as the battle for the younger demographic continues to tighten to a near-statistical dead heat.

Fox News

Fox News continues to hold the mantle of the most-watched cable news network, but the September data suggests that even the industry leader is not immune to the current downward trend. For the first time in recent reporting periods, the network’s primetime total viewer numbers dipped below the significant 2 million mark. According to the Nielsen figures, Fox News averaged 1.717 million total viewers during the primetime block. In the critical Adults 25-54 demographic—the metric most closely watched by advertisers for its purchasing power—the network drew 156,000 viewers during primetime.

When looking at the total day performance, which measures the average viewership from 6:00 AM to 6:00 AM, Fox News remained the leader with 1.112 million total viewers and 106,000 in the 25-54 demographic. Despite maintaining its first-place ranking in total day viewership, the internal comparisons show a steep decline. Compared to the network’s performance in August 2026, Fox News saw its primetime total viewership slide by 19%, while its demo numbers dropped by 17%. The total day figures told a similar story, with an 18% decrease in total viewers and an 11% decline in the demo relative to the previous month.

The year-over-year comparisons paint an even more stark picture of the shifting media environment. When measured against September 2025, Fox News’ primetime total viewership fell by a substantial 32%, and the decline in the 25-54 demo was even more pronounced at 44%. Total day numbers compared to the previous year were down 31% in total viewers and 40% in the demo. These figures suggest that the network is currently operating at a significantly lower baseline than it was a year ago. In the broader context of all cable television, Fox News finished the month of September in second place for total primetime viewers and third place in the primetime demo. However, it maintained its dominance in the total day category, finishing at number one in total viewers and number two in the demo.

MS NOW

MS NOW secured its position as the second-most-watched news network in terms of total viewers, carving out a clear space between itself and CNN in that specific metric. During the month of September, MS NOW averaged 839,000 total viewers in primetime and 544,000 viewers across the total day. While these numbers were enough to secure a silver medal in the news category, the network was not spared from the month-over-month decline that affected the entire industry. Primetime total viewership for MS NOW was down 11% compared to August, while the Adults 25-54 demo fell by 6%, reaching an average of 79,000 viewers.

In the total day category, MS NOW’s viewership decreased by 9% in both total audience and the key demo, with the latter averaging 52,000 viewers. However, MS NOW provided a rare bright spot in the year-over-year analysis. Unlike its primary competitor Fox News, MS NOW actually saw growth when compared to its September 2025 performance. The network’s primetime total viewership rose by 4%, and its demo numbers saw a healthy 14% increase. This upward trajectory continued into the total day metrics, where the network grew its total audience by 7% and its demo reach by 16% compared to the same month last year.

Despite these year-over-year gains, MS NOW’s standing in the wider cable landscape reflects the intense competition for eyeballs. The network finished September as the third-highest-rated cable network overall during primetime and total day among total viewers. However, its performance in the younger demographic remains an area for potential growth, as it finished 13th in the demo during primetime and 11th during the total day across all cable networks. The narrow margin in the demo between MS NOW and its closest news rival, CNN, remains one of the most watched storylines in the industry.

CNN

CNN’s performance in September highlighted a network in the midst of a tight competitive struggle, particularly in the demographic metrics that drive advertising revenue. During the primetime hours, CNN averaged 539,000 total viewers, placing it behind both Fox News and MS NOW. In the Adults 25-54 demographic, however, CNN managed to hold onto a second-place finish among news networks with 90,000 viewers. This result is particularly significant because it illustrates a shrinking lead; a mere 1,000 viewers separated CNN from MS NOW in the primetime demo, a margin so thin that it underscores the volatility of the current market.

Looking at the total day averages, CNN drew 373,000 total viewers and 53,000 viewers in the 25-54 demo. Like its peers, CNN saw double-digit declines when compared to its August 2026 performance. The network’s primetime total viewership fell by 14%, while its demo numbers dropped by 17%. The total day statistics showed a 15% decline in total viewers and a 20% drop in the demo compared to the previous month. These month-to-month losses suggest that the summer-to-fall transition was particularly difficult for the network’s programming slate.

The year-over-year data for CNN presented a mixed bag of results. In primetime, total viewership was nearly flat, sliding by only 1% compared to September 2025. More encouragingly for the network, its primetime demo numbers actually grew by 3% over the same period. However, the total day comparisons were less favorable, with CNN experiencing a 7% decline in total viewers and a 15% drop in the demo compared to September of the previous year. In the overall cable rankings, CNN finished the month in fifth place for primetime and fourth place for total day in total viewers. In the demographic rankings, it secured the 11th spot in primetime and the 10th spot for total day across all cable networks.

The collective performance of these three giants in September 2026 serves as a barometer for the current state of cable news. The universal month-over-month decline suggests a period of audience fatigue or a temporary lack of a "blockbuster" news cycle to drive consistent viewing habits. As the networks move further into the autumn season, the focus will likely shift toward how these organizations can reclaim the viewers lost during the September slump.

For Fox News, the challenge remains maintaining its massive total viewer lead while attempting to stem the double-digit year-over-year losses. For MS NOW, the objective is to capitalize on its year-over-year growth to further close the gap in the demo. For CNN, the priority appears to be defending its razor-thin lead in the Adults 25-54 category while looking for ways to boost its total viewer base. As the industry moves toward the final quarter of the year, these ratings fluctuations will undoubtedly influence programming decisions and advertising strategies in an increasingly fragmented media environment.
