BMW Reveals 2027 iX3 M60 as High-Performance Flagship of New Electric SUV Lineup

Published on October 8, 2026

BMW is accelerating its transition into the next era of electromobility by turning up the heat on its latest sport activity vehicle. The German automaker has officially pulled the wraps off the 2027 BMW iX3 M60, a vehicle positioned as the high-performance, range-topping variant of its upcoming all-electric SUV family. By blending the raw power of BMW’s latest electric drive units with the precision engineering of the M Performance division, the iX3 M60 aims to set a new benchmark for what drivers can expect from a battery-electric vehicle in the premium midsize segment.

The arrival of the M60 variant signals BMW’s intent to ensure that its electric future remains rooted in the "Ultimate Driving Machine" philosophy. While the standard iX3 focuses on efficiency and versatility, the M60 is designed for those who demand visceral acceleration and sharpened handling. Packing 603 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque, this SUV is capable of sprinting from 0 to 62 miles per hour in just 3.9 seconds, a figure that places it firmly in the territory of dedicated sports cars.

However, the iX3 M60 is more than just a collection of impressive acceleration figures. It represents a holistic approach to performance, incorporating a more aggressive chassis setup, bespoke M-specific styling cues, and the very latest iteration of BMW’s electric-drive technology. As the automotive industry shifts toward software-defined vehicles, the M60 also debuts advanced processing power designed to harmonize the relationship between the driver and the machine.

603 HP From Two Electric Motors

While the iX3 M60 stops just short of being a "full-blown" M car—a distinction usually reserved for the most hardcore track-ready models—it receives a significant injection of hardware designed to elevate the driving experience far beyond the standard model. At the core of this performance leap is BMW’s sixth-generation M eDrive system. This architecture utilizes a dual-motor configuration, providing the SUV with a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system that can distribute power instantaneously between the front and rear axles.

The rear axle, in particular, benefits from a new electrically excited synchronous motor. This unit is paired with a more powerful 420-amp inverter, which is instrumental in delivering the "extra oomph" required to reach that 603-horsepower peak. Unlike permanent magnet motors, BMW’s electrically excited units do not rely on rare-earth materials for their magnets, and they are known for maintaining high torque levels even at high rotational speeds, ensuring that the M60’s power delivery remains linear and relentless.

In terms of raw data, the iX3 M60 produces 603 hp and 645 lb-ft of torque. This allows the SUV to hit the 62 mph mark in 3.9 seconds, providing the kind of neck-snapping launches that have become a hallmark of high-end electric performance. While BMW has not yet released official EPA range estimates for the North American market, the increase in performance typically comes with a trade-off in total distance. The standard, non-performance variant of the iX3 is expected to offer up to 434 miles of range on the more optimistic European testing cycles; however, the M60 will likely see a slight decrease from that figure due to its high-output motors and performance-oriented tire compounds.

BMW’s ‘Heart of Joy’ Does The Heavy Lifting

The hardware is only half of the story in the 2027 iX3 M60. To manage the immense power and ensure the vehicle remains composed under duress, BMW has introduced a new central processing unit known internally as the "Heart of Joy." This high-performance computer acts as the central nervous system for the vehicle, processing driving-related inputs up to 10 times faster than the systems found in BMW’s previous-generation vehicles.
